Low Energy? Consider CoQ10 and PQQ
Low Energy – Consider CoQ10 and PQQ Jane Jackson, RN, CRC 5/2/2026
Every organ in the body runs on cellular energy. Cells make energy by converting the food we eat into ATP (adenosine triphosphate) – the main molecule cells use to power functions such as muscle contraction, nerve signaling, and building/repairing cells. This energy conversion happens in the cell’s mitochondria (the cell’s “power centers”). Mitochondia play a central role in energy production throughout the body.
Two nutrients important for stabilizing cellular energy are CoQ10 and PQQ. Together, these two nutrients were searched 210K times in March, 2026 – according to Wordstream. CoQ10 helps support cellular energy pathways, while PQQ is an antioxidant with the potential to assist in the function of failing mitochondria.
CoQ10 – Coenzyme 10
CoQ10 (coenzyme Q10) is a vitamin-like compound your body naturally uses in mitochondria to help move electrons through the energy-making process. Because natural levels can decline with age, CoQ10 has become one of the most popular mitochondrial-focused supplements.
The two most common forms are ubiquinone and ubiquinol. The difference can make the label a lot less confusing.
- Ubiquinone is the “oxidized” form and is the most common form you’ll see on labels. It is considered very stable and can be more cost-effective.
- Ubiquinol is the “reduced” form—commonly marketed as easier to absorb for some people, especially older adults.
CoQ10 is present in small amounts in foods (especially meat, fish, and organ meats). Still, typical dietary intake is much lower than the amounts used in supplements. Since CoQ10 is fat-soluble, many people prefer taking it with a meal that contains some fat, and you’ll often see it sold as softgels in an oil base. There isn’t an official recommended daily allowance available for CoQ10. Still, most supplement doses for adults are in the 100-200 mg/day range.
Common CoQ10 Dietary Supplements
- CoQ10 (ubiquinone)
- CoQ10 (ubiquinol)
- CoQ10 softgels in an oil base (common delivery format)
PQQ – Pyrroloquinoline Quinone
Researchers discovered PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone) – a nutrient made by bacteria in fruits and vegetables. PQQ has been studied for its role in supporting mitochondrial function.
The best way to get PQQ into your system is to eat fruits and vegetables; however, dietary supplements are available. The dietary supplement contains approximately 250 times the amount of PQQ found in a typical diet. The maximum recommended daily dose for adults is 20 mg.
NOTE – Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not consider this supplement without consulting professional healthcare advice first.
When food is metabolized into energy, free radicals are released at the cellular level. Too many free radicals can damage bodily systems, beginning at the mitochondrial level. This process results in poor cellular function. PQQ is a powerful antioxidant that helps neutralize free radicals.
PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone) is found mainly in
- Green peppers
- Kiwi, Papaya
- Parsley, Spinach, Celery
- Tea
- Breast milk
PQQ-only Dietary Supplements
- PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone) capsules (often listed as PQQ disodium salt)
- PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone) tablets (often listed as PQQ disodium salt)
Dietary supplements that combine PQQ and CoQ10 are available. Since hitting the consumer market, these combination formulas have become increasinglt popular.
A combined CoQ10 + PQQ supplement can be appealing for a simple reason: the two nutrients support mitochondrial health in different, complementary ways. CoQ10 is best known for its role in the mitochondrial energy pathway. In contrast, PQQ is typically known for its antioxidant activity and mitochondrial support. Combining the two ingredients offers a convenient way to support mitochondrial health.
